Norske Skog is one of the pioneers, together with News International, to use reusable cores on a larger scale. All newsprint delivered to News International in UK will be delivered on reusable aluminium cores with active RFID-tags and will be circulated in a closed loop system between the printing plants and the Skogn mill. News International has agreed on a long term contract with Norske Skog until 2015 to support the new green concept.

To integrate the reusable cores with existing strawboard cores Norske Skog has awarded Core Link with an extension of existing core handling system to automatically handle and mix the cores without manual handling. Skogn mill has also decided to deliver all rolls with grooved cores, according to Metso Paper patent, which will guarantee best roll quality. Trials have proven that mixing different core qualities with grooved core ends improve winder performance in two drum winders and minimise bouncing and core eccentricity. Core Link will also deliver a fully automatic core groover for the strawboard cores and a manual core groover for minor maintenance of the reusable cores. The aluminium cores, with active RFID for asset tracking, are supplied by RFTRAQ.

The new system is a fully automatic system to:

§         unload butt rolls on reusable cores
§         strip the rest paper and re-pulp it in a minipulper
§         check the core and RFID tag

§         core storage and mix the cores with strawboard cores and deliver to the winders
